About
16 years ago, I was introduced to my first Great
Pyrenees when my husband brought him home. That
day will live in my heart and mind ~forever~.
It
was a very cold and wet day in Slidell, Louisiana.
The Mardi Gras celebrations had just concluded
and we were having the coldest weather on record
in years. I was a newlywed wife and had taken
a part time job at the pet store in the local
mall over the holidays since I've always had
such a love of all animals. My husband was an
auto mechanic located on Interstate 10. One
evening, he came home from work and as he entered
the door he replied "look what I found, it's
a white St. Bernard!"
One
look told me this was no St. Bernard! I had
been reading about all the dog breeds in my
AKC book and knew there was no mistaking the
sweet, gentle expression of a Great Pyrenees.
The
poor guy was in terrible shape. He had been
running loose for quite awhile on the Interstate
and was matted and skinny. He was nevertheless
happy to be in a warm and cozy place with carpeting
and the smell of dinner on the stove as evidenced
by his wagging doggy tail.
Within
the first minute of meeting this gentle soul,
I was taken "hook, line, and sinker". As my
husband approached me, he followed at his heals
and then sat at my feet, looked up at me with
those beautiful dark eyes, and offered me the
"pyr paw". My heart melted in an instant!
I
named my new friend "Snow". He took his place
in our home and in our hearts, but only for
a little while. His life was cut short by pneumonia
and we lost him to Rainbow Bridge about three
months later. We did everything we could and
no dog ever appreciated human kindness more
than Snow. May he rest in peace.....
